About

Catharin Shepard

I'm a journalist with over eight years of experience working in daily and weekly newsrooms. In the last six years I've brought home more than 20 awards from the North Carolina Press Association's News, Editorial and Photojournalism Contest. I earned my master's degree from the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.

I care about my community and have a passion for helping people. I want to tell others' stories and provide the knowledge my readers need to stay informed. I'm a person before I'm a reporter and believe it's the best way to do journalism. I value compassion as highly as I value accuracy and timeliness.

My community involvement has included serving with the Raeford-Hoke County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Hoke County Habitat for Humanity and the Hoke County Friends of the Library.

I'm a reptile enthusiast and have volunteered locally as an independent animal outreach educator. I enjoy sharing my passion for reptiles with children and adults while teaching them about the importance of conservation, even for animals many people find scary.

I enjoy reading, traveling, swimming, being a beach bum, gardening, gaming, new experiences, movies with plenty of explosions, Georgia football, and the Oxford comma. Things I do not enjoy include unexpected encounters with spiders, burnt toast, and stepping barefoot on Legos or sandspurs.
